A BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. ALBANS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB
St. Albans RUFC was founded in 1970 from the remains of the EAC Sports Club founded in 1947.
This came about when a young solicitor Peter Baines arrived in the City of St.Albans and was not able to join either of the two existing closed rugby union clubs OA's or OV's.So he founded St.Albans RUFC "to give the ordinary people of the City the opportunity to play Rugby Union".This is why we are known nowadays as "The People's Club". With the support of the players at EAC and others the Club got off the ground -it's first real home a tiny clubhouse with 2 pitches a stone's throw from St.Albans Cathedral on Holiwell Hill.It was a struggle scraping a side and a fixture list together but they did and they grew.In 1983,their original site now a housing estate, they moved to their present home at Boggymead Spring,Smallford. The days of being the poor relations to everyone disappeared in the 1980's with 5 senior sides and a Colts side. As Pilkington Shield finalists at Twickenham in 1995 losing 11-10 to Queens,at the dawn of the League era,Saints had really come of age. Their most historic recent moment was knocking their more senior St.Albans neighbours OA's,in the London 1 League, out of the Herts President's Cup in 2007.
Two League promotions have been hard earned since then and Saints are now in the League,London North 3.
A warm welcome at Boggymead Spring is guaranteed !
Directions.
We are situated less than two miles from St Albans city centre with easy access by road to the A1, M1, M10 and the M25. The site is also very well served by public transport with frequent buses to both St Albans and Hatfield.
The Clubhouse is big enough to accommodate two home matches with room to spare and the site has two pitches which rank amongst the best in the county for playing quality. There are regular floodlight training sessions . If all that makes you thirsty there is a large well stocked bar to lean against, set in a spacious main hall.
The Club is very informal, anyone can join and their team position is strictly on merit. We have a large VPs section giving the club financial and vocal support, but they do not influence club policy.
Join Us either come down when we are open - Saturday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, or you can contact The Chairman, John Martin
